Daily Dose 4.9.23

Casey Kolp with the Detroit Fire Department firetruck.

Happy Easter, bunnies and chicks! You know what they say, another day, another excuse to binge on chocolate and whip out those pastel-colored polos you only wear once a year. I joined forces with some friends who were brave enough to host (I don’t know how they do it, but they must like us enough to put up with our shenanigans). I brought my classic Soft Snickerdoodle Cake Cookies with some Easter flair – because nothing says “he has risen” like stuffing your face with sugary treats to the point of having regret yet still going in for more.

But the real holiday in Detroit was opening day for baseball season.  It’s a day that unites us all – Tigers fans or not – in the quest for cheap beer and hole-in-the-wall hot dog stands. It’s like Christmas morning, but without the presents, unless you count that lukewarm Bud Light as a gift, which TBH, sometimes can feel like one. It’s been centuries, or at least that’s what it feels like, since our beloved Tigers had a winning season, but we still show up year after year for the opening day festivities, because we’re loyal like that…or because we haven’t learned our lesson yet. This year, we started the day at Engine No. 1 Firehouse before heading to the old ball game. The weather was a bit on the chilly side, but hey, we’re Michiganders – we were built to withstand anything mother nature throws our way. Sadly, our Tigers lost, but at least there was no shortage of cheering and imbibing. We were courteous enough to do them separately, though – nobody wants a beer shower mid-6th inning. All in all, it was a day of friendship, community, and a whole lot of questionable fashion choices. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to pair Crocs with a baseball cap, can we please have a chat? That’s what makes the opening day so special – we can all come together as one, despite our differences, to celebrate America’s favorite pastime and put off doing our taxes for a few more hours.

Waking up at the same time each day seems self-explanatory, but it’s not realistic for most of us. (SELF)

I would try a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. (Pocket)
